Product piping and leak detectors
Product-line tightness and leak detector functionality are separate evaluations of the fuel delivery system. For regulated UST piping, 40 CFR 280.44 defines a line tightness method capable of detecting 0.1 gallon per hour at one-and-one-half times operating pressure. Automatic line leak detector criteria address a 3 gallon-per-hour leak at 10 psi within one hour.
Precision line testing evaluates rigid or flexible piping using the accepted procedure for the installed system. Estabrook Product Line Tester and Leak Detector Tester equipment support the work. A simulated leak checks the mechanical or electronic detector response: flow restriction, shutdown, or alarm, as applicable. Detector functionality does not substitute for a line tightness result.
Product lines and connected dispensers are isolated as required by the procedure. Testing windows account for customer traffic, fleet departures, fuel deliveries, and access to pump and dispenser equipment. Phased work can preserve other fueling capacity where the system allows safe, independent isolation.
Separate results identify each tested line and detector, the test pressure and conditions, and the outcome. Applicable reporting forms and diagnostic records support agency review and corporate records. A failed result identifies the need for investigation, contractor repair, and any required retest; it does not by itself locate every defect.
